Protection Relay Testing

Protection Relay Testing. Protecting marine power systems from circuit failure and overheating

Protection relays are an important feature of power systems, as they detect any element that develops a fault or suffers a short circuit, tripping the circuit breaker. They are essential to prevent power failure across the system, or even fire. Protection Relay Testing.

For this reason, they need to be tested periodically throughout their lifespan (at least every 2 years).Modern protection relays provide multiple protection functions, and therefore require multiple tests.

At RB Marine, we have developed rigorous testing procedures for protection relays to ensure correct functioning and continued safety.

Our services include:

  • Generator Protection – Current is passed through the generator relay to find the minimum sensitivity. The current is then compared to the manufacturer’s relay settings across a range of values. If any discrepancies are found, then the relay is repaired or replaced by our engineers.
  • Motor Protection – AC motors often require sophisticated protection relay systems to ensure that external trip orders are executed correctly, and other protection features operate properly.
  • Feeder Unit Protection – Both circulated current and balanced voltage feeder unit systems can be tested, repaired or replaced by our specialist engineers.
  • Busbar Protection – Trip tests are carried out on the different zones of the bus differential by running a fault simulation with a test current or by short-circuiting currents with the highest load, then checking that the correct circuit breakers trip out. Our engineers will rectify problems on-site.
  • Transformer Protection – Modern transformer relays protect against a variety of problems, including primary and secondary winding, interturn, core and oil tank faults, as well as over-fluxing and thermal failures. Our engineers are skilled at inspecting and assessing all the protection relay systems mentioned
  •  Synchronizing Devices – Many power systems have synchronization systems in place to protect various devices and elements, transformers and generators for instance. We have the equipment and knowledge to inspect these systems and rectify problems.
  • Translay – We test the protection relays between the transformers in a Translay system to ensure correct trip operation.
  • Buchholtz – Buchholtz relays prevents the problems associated with faults developing inside transformers. Short circuit, winding and core faults are detected and protected against by the relay. This critical protection relay is thoroughly tested and repaired if necessary.
  • Tripping & Control Equipment – All tripping and control equipment and components within a system can be tested. Pick up and tripping times are tested to ensure they are within a permittable range. A back-up of the existing configuration is taken before function testing and calibration, if needed.
  • Installation & Testing of all types of Digital & Analog Relays – All electromechanical, analog and digital relays can be installed and tested by our experienced engineers.
  • Measurements of live CT currents, checking of relay wiring & its tightness.
  • Testing of relays by Primary & Secondary Injection Tests.
  • Calibration of all types of relays to verify if the relay operation is within its trip time and pick up current tolerances.
  • Relay engineering and programming, Relay setting and Scheme checking.
  • Alarm test-checks the functioning of Alarm, which is to notify of the errors in the internal circuit.
